Many call me “Mel” most call me “Tita.” I am the owner of Chiquita’s Clay business. I've lived my adult life striving to be an “i-n-d-e-p-e-n-d-e-n-t woman.” I was raised In the east side of Austin with a Hispanic/Mexican background. Growing up, the ideas of womanhood always seemed off to me. “Cook, serve, clean, work, blah” There was no “living for yourself,” no individuality, no independence. So many of the women or relationships around me lived like this and normalized it. I disliked it and I wanted to be different. wanted to be my own person, support myself, and live for myself. I knew I could do this in many forms if I worked towards it, but once my passion for art arouse, I knew which path I should be on. I started with painting, party decor, home decor, almost every craft you could think of. Until I got my hands on clay. I loved how therapeutic it felt, the time I allowed for myself, the creativity that stirred up inside me. I couldn’t not share this with others. I wanted to provide a range of handmade products to make people feel confident and happy. Chiquita’s Clay has embodied my goals and vision, and this is just the beginning of my journey.
